What Gets Measured Gets Managed

One thing that makes me so obsessed with Anki is the stats. Not gonna lie—I have friends who think I actually work for Anki. Each morning, I open the app and grind for about an hour, then check how much time I spent and how many cards I reviewed that day. After that, I take a quick glance at the past week, month, and even my overall history, seeing my progress in a bigger picture. I’ll do a bit of math to figure out how much I’ve learned each day and each month on average, and at this pace, how far I can go by a certain point in time. I also track where I stand in this 10,000-card challenge. All these stats really paint a clear picture and motivate me to keep moving forward every day. In English, there’s a saying: “What gets measured gets managed.” Anki truly embodies this principle to the fullest.

Một điều khiến tôi mê mẩn Anki chính là phần thống kê. Thật lòng mà nói, có bạn bè còn nghĩ tôi làm việc cho Anki. Mỗi sáng, tôi mở ứng dụng và học khoảng một tiếng, rồi kiểm tra xem hôm nay mình đã dành bao nhiêu thời gian và làm được bao nhiêu thẻ. Sau đó, tôi nhìn lại tuần trước, tháng trước, và cả lịch sử để thấy tiến trình của mình trong một bức tranh lớn hơn. Tôi còn làm vài phép tính nhỏ để biết trung bình mỗi ngày, mỗi tháng mình học được bao nhiêu, và với tốc độ này thì đến một thời điểm nhất định sẽ đi được bao xa. Tôi cũng theo dõi xem mình đang ở đâu trong thử thách 10.000 thẻ. Tất cả những con số này vẽ ra cho tôi một bức tranh rõ ràng và thúc đẩy tôi tiến lên mỗi ngày. Trong tiếng Anh có câu: “What gets measured gets managed.” Anki thực sự thể hiện câu nói này một cách hoàn hảo.

Satu perkara yang membuat saya begitu obses dengan Anki ialah statistiknya. Terus terang, ada kawan yang fikir saya bekerja untuk Anki. Setiap pagi, saya buka aplikasi dan belajar selama kira-kira sejam, kemudian semak berapa banyak masa dan kad yang saya ulang hari itu. Selepas itu, saya lihat sekilas pada minggu lepas, bulan lepas, dan keseluruhan sejarah untuk nampak perkembangan saya dalam gambaran yang lebih besar. Saya juga buat sedikit kiraan untuk tahu purata berapa saya belajar setiap hari dan setiap bulan, dan dengan kadar ini sejauh mana saya boleh pergi menjelang masa tertentu. Saya turut pantau kedudukan saya dalam cabaran 10,000 kad. Semua statistik ini benar-benar memberi gambaran jelas dan mendorong saya untuk terus maju setiap hari. Dalam bahasa Inggeris ada pepatah: “What gets measured gets managed.” Anki memang melaksanakan pepatah ini dengan sebaik-baiknya.

I set a rule for myself: no long texts after midnight. People always say nothing good happens late at night, and I’ve come to believe it. Those hours are when I feel most vulnerable. Intersection at My Campus

There’s a T‑intersection on my campus that really gets on my nerves sometimes. It’s the spot that connects the on‑campus and off‑campus areas, and I have to cross it every single day to get to the canteen, the MRT station, and my classes—basically everywhere. The problem is that the road coming into the T is on a slope. You can’t see the cars until they’re right at the mouth of the intersection, and they can’t see you either. On top of that, cars are turning in from both the left and right, so you end up checking behind, ahead, and to the side all at once. And of course, there’s no pedestrian crossing. The cars aren’t going fast, so technically they could slow down when they see me crossing. But this is Hong Kong—no line means cars have the right of way. I always feel tempted to do it the Vietnamese way: just step out when it’s safe enough, even if a car is nearby, and let them go around me, slow down, or wait a few seconds.
